Music Theory App – Chords in Keys
Would you like a music theory app to upgrade your musicianship?
Can you immediately identify what chords vi, ii & iii are in the key of Db…? How about in B melodic minor? What if they were played as sevenths? Can you make use of this knowledge?
The ability to do this, and to improvise or compose accurately over chord progressions, is a common problem for aspiring and even experienced musicians.
If a musician is unable to think in terms of keys and chord numbers, they are often reduced to using ‘safe’ options.
This could be sticking to pentatonics or performing the same tired old chord progressions. It could mean clinging to arpeggios for dear life, or even guessing at note choices!
How can we fix this?
To break out of these limiting approaches to music, it’s essential to understand music theory. Music theory is simply how music works.
With an understanding of music theory we become able to think our way around any key quickly and efficiently.
The music theory app ‘Music Theory – Chords in Keys’ teaches and tests users on the fundamentals of harmony using. Chords and scales covered:
- Triads
- Sevenths
- The major scale
- The natural minor scale
- The melodic minor scales
- The harmonic minor scale
Regular use of the music theory app ‘Music Theory – Chords in Keys’ will enable you to understand explicitly what is happening in just about any chord progression. This is true for almost any style of msusic be it pop, rock, jazz, country or thrash metal. It will open doors to vastly improved improvising and musical freedom.
Who is this music theory app for?
‘Music Theory – Chords in Keys’ is a music theory app suitable for aspiring musicians of any instrument. It is for any musician that wants to develop their understanding of music and improve their musicianship.
“I’ve already learned a bit of music theory. Why do I need a music theory app”
Many people do learn some music theory on a basic level. Unfortunately most then fail to develop the fluency and speed of thought required to make use of it. This takes thorough and complete practice.
Think about the example at the top of this page. If you’ve learned a little theory in the past you might eventually be able to work out the answers.
That’s not much use in the real world of music though.
Once music theory is learned, repeated and comprehensive testing is essential. Only then can you develop the speed of thought necessary to make use of your knowledge.
The music theory app ‘Music Theory – Chords in Keys’ tests users to identify all triads and sevenths in each of the four fundamental scales – in all twelve keys.
This is the key to higher level musicianship. What’s more, the latest version now includes audio so you can hear what you learn too.
“I don’t want to sacrifice my practice time”
‘Music Theory – Chords in Keys’ is a music theory app created for you to develop your knowledge and speed of thought whilst away from your instrument.
You can put in 10 minutes whilst on a bus, at the coffee shop, waiting for friend, relaxing before a gig, etc. You can make use of what would otherwise be ‘dead time’. Your practice time can remain intact.

Great but needs an added feature A nice app that is simple and easy to use, but needs to have an option to pick an individual scale to study. Right now you have all 12 scales at once and that can be a daunting task for beginners.
– Thanks for the feedback and suggestion Renee. I’ve now added this feature to the latest version which you will get as an automatic update. With best wishes, Stuart.

Great App for beginners and more advanced learners. June 4, 2014
This review is for: Music Theory – Chords in Keys
As a music teacher, I’m always on the look out for new ways to support learners. The great thing about this app is the simplicity of the interface combined with the hours of use you can get from it. For me it acts as a great way to sharpen my knowledge and make me quicker. For the beginner, it’s a brilliant way to get engaged in something that can seem tedious. The mini lesson explanations are also a nice touch. Great app, well worth the price.

Good memorization practice for the novice (like me), March 22, 2014
This review is for: Music Theory – Chords in Keys
The app is very simple to use, but like flash cards, helps you get a grip on memorizing chord sets for keys (or calculating them out). The app is strictly in a test format which is what gives it its usefulness in memorization, but isn’t useful for quick reference, so you’ll probably only want to use this if you need to learn the process of Identifying chords for different keys. It also only deals with simple triads in major or minor forms, but is a great memorization tool for beginners. There’s plenty of other free or cheap apps that have more usefulness as a reference source.

This is a great little app – ideal for those moments when you don’t have your guitar to hand, but want to improve your theory knowledge. Rather than just learning shapes on the guitar neck, this app gets you thinking about the chords themselves, and how they all fit together. Being a good musician is alot about listening fast and thinking fast, and this app is ideal for developing the latter of these.
